Kathmandu: As tensions between India and Pakistan rise in the wake of recent cross-border military actions, the Government of Nepal has officially voiced its position, condemning terrorism and expressing concern over escalating regional instability.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nepal expressed deep concern over the worsening situation following the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 27 people, including a Nepali national. “Nepal stands firmly against all forms of terrorism,” the statement said, while extending solidarity with India in condemning the "heinous" attack.
Nepal also reaffirmed its commitment not to allow its territory to be used for any activity harmful to its neighbors, a clear message amidst regional tensions and increased security scrutiny.
Border Surveillance Intensified
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs has significantly ramped up security measures across the Nepal-India border in response to the evolving regional security landscape. According to Joint Spokesperson of the Armed Police Force (APF), Shelendra Thapa, more than 10,000 APF personnel have been mobilized along key border points, with an intensive series of patrols and checkpoints established over the past 48 hours.
From April 23 to April 25, 312 patrols — including 84 joint patrols with India’s Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and 228 individual patrols — were conducted, while 1,844 security checkpoints were set up across various districts.
Patrolling units have been deployed from several regional APF headquarters, including Sunsari, Mahottari, Makawanpur, Kaski, Rupandehi, and Kailali. Surveillance has also been increased in urban areas deemed critical from a security standpoint.
The government has coordinated intelligence-sharing and monitoring efforts with Nepal Police, the National Investigation Department, local representatives, and the general public. Authorities have emphasized maintaining traditional cross-border movement without disruption while ensuring illegal activities are prevented.
These actions come amid ongoing Indian military operations, including airstrikes in Pakistan under ‘Operation Sindoor,’ which have intensified regional uncertainty and raised concerns over a potential broader conflict.
Nepal’s latest steps reflect both a diplomatic stance against terrorism and a proactive internal response to protect national and border security.
